Saturday morning and the temps are suppose to get above zero, time to ride and explore. Dean and family were at their cabin on Harding Lake and invited me out to do some trail riding. So Jake and I decided to go and visit them, I hadn’t been to their cabin on the lake and was looking forward to it.
When we arrived around 9:00 AM it was -15 below and I was in no hurry to get on my sled and freeze, so we hung around the cabin a few hours and had coffee and breakfast that Marquese made for everyone.
Around 11:00 it warmed up to zero or so and that was good enough for me and everyone else, so off we went. Dean lead us across the lake to a small trail that headed onto the Salcha River Winter Trail. Nice riding and surprisingly smooth for a winter trail.
We ended up about 40 to 45 miles upriver, almost to the Caribou for those of you who know the area. I’d like to make another trip and explore it more, just to see how far one can get back up that way, might be good knowledge for future winter hunting trips.
The temperature farther up river just kept getting warmer and warmer with every mile and I almost didn’t want to head back because I knew it would get cold again, but oh well, we did have to get home :<) All I can say is it was a great ride and another good day to be in Alaska enjoying the wild back country.
