Our first great granddaugter, Briley, a bit fussy in this video and she’s usually such a happy baby 🙂

New Year’s Day and I figured it was time to see if I could harvest some meat for the freezer to get us through the year, at least until next September when Moose season opens again.
On Monday, the 31st Dec I stopped by the Fish and Game office and got my winter Moose tag for the Minto Flats hunt, but of course they closed it two days later, before I even got a chance to go out and try to fill my tag. So it looks like it’s going to be our Year of the Caribou. The first tag we filled was Trish’s and it was a small Bou, but still 80 pounds or so of meat for the freezer when it’s all done and said.
The first three pictures below are from New Years Day. The rest are from the trip in with Jake and Scott on the 5th.

Chena Lakes and Rosebud
The weather was holding nice at a -10 below or warmer so I decided to take a run on Wed, Dec 26th, out to Chena lakes. I also wanted to chat with John Schakley, the head ranger as he is retiring as of the 31st. John’s been a ranger at the lakes for 26 years and has done a great job of keeping the facility up and going. He’s done a lot to help FST in all the various events we’ve had over the years, he’ll be missed.
It was about -5 below when I unloaded and starting checking out some of the trails and open fields. With the nicer temps, well temps warmer than -20 below anyway, I was surprised there weren’t more tracks out there. I spent about 3 hours just riding in the powder and enjoying a nice day by myself.

First real ride of the seaon
Finally got my first real ride of the season, I say first real ride as my November run down south of Cantwell was a disappointment with no snow. I did get to the cabin and get the roof on, but we should of taken the ATV’s instead of the sleds.
All the FST club rides had been canceled so far this season, either no snow or major cold temps in the -30 to -40 below range. I was going to lead the ride on Sat the 22nd from Nordale Road to Chatanika, but when I saw a -45 below for that morning I canceled it.

We got a roof
Another exciting trip down to the cabin to get the roof on and haul in some materials. Lenny, who helped last Sept framing the 2nd level porch and the roof over the porch came down with me on Nov 23rd, the day after we all got our fill of Turkey
Since it is the end of November and that usually means snow, we took the snowmachines and tow behind sled. Plan was to use Friday for travel and material hauling, figuring we’d have at least a foot of snow. What a disappointment as there was maybe 2 inches of snow on the ground at the trail head. Not encouraging, so do we forget it and go home or what.

November 2012
All I can say is it’s been an interesting month. I drew a late season moose tag, so I didn’t hunt real hard during the general season thinking I’d get mine after everyone else had gone home and stopped beating the brush.
So I headed out every Saturday starting the weekend after my birthday. First trip was promising although there were still a lot of guys out hunting. At mile 67 of the Steese is a hugh gravel pit divided into two sections, looks like the old pit and a newer one with a big ditch dividing the two up. As I’m driving by I see this moose, hum, maybe, stop get out of the truck, yup it’s legal, so I get my rifle and steady stick and slowly walk down for a cleaner shoot, just as I’m getting my sights on the moose this (I can not repeat the words I used here) Fish and Game vehicle comes tearing down the other side of the ditch between the two gravel pits driving 35 miles an hour and kicking up gravel, what he/she was looking for I have no idea, buy my moose took off running and that opportunity is gone.

Election Day and my birthday
What a mix today is and with any luck we’ll have a new Pres and that will be a great birthday present.
Now I just need to get my sleds back from the shop and go do some riding before the weather gets to cold, oh wait, it’s already -25 below, oh well.

Some pictures from my time at the Hurricane cabin, a very rainy trip, but we did get a good lick in, just not the roof felt and metal :<( The damage to the form board and string was courtesy of one small black bear, the little bugger.
