We got a roof

Posted by on November 29, 2012

Another exciting trip down to the cabin to get the roof on and haul in some materials. Lenny, who helped last Sept framing the 2nd level porch and the roof over the porch came down with me on Nov 23rd, the day after we all got our fill of Turkey 

Since it is the end of November and that usually means snow, we took the snowmachines and tow behind sled. Plan was to use Friday for travel and material hauling, figuring we’d have at least a foot of snow. What a disappointment as there was maybe 2 inches of snow on the ground at the trail head. Not encouraging, so do we forget it and go home or what.

Putting on the roof

I decided we’d do the Or What and we off loaded the Bearcat and M sleds and hauled a load in, which consisted of food, tools, and some water. By time we go to the cabin I knew the M sled wasn’t making another trip out until it was time to go home. Most of the ride was off the trail and on the tundra so we could keep the sleds cool and not damage the ski’s and tracks.

I made two more trips and decided that that was that and left a half a pickup truck worth of materials, it’ll just have to wait until the snow actually falls. Of course we’d have done much better if we’d of ridden the 4 wheelers down like my neighbor that I ran into.

Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday was spent on the roof using the 32 foot extension ladders and a couple of 2x12x16 boards for a plank and got the Ice Shield on the north side, finished the metal and fasica board and then did the south side.

So although it was a disappointment in the amount of snowfall, we got a roof.

On the way home Wednesday the radio said it was to be -40 below in Fairbanks, hey I’m going back were we had a low of 5 above and highs in the upper teens. Of course we did burn up lots of heating fuel, just about ran out of wood and used half of my fuel oil supply up. I guess that comes from wanting to stay warm in an un-insulated cabin. I guess I’ll need to fix that problem and it to the top of the list, insulating the roof, walls and floors will definitely be the next priority.
