Hunting Season Approaches

Now that the Tanana Valley Fair is over the weather has improved. Its a known fact (locally anyway) that during the week of the Fair (August) it is going to be wet and cool, just happens that way no matter if they move it a week earlier or later as the Fair Folks have done in the past.

I did get some of the veggies from the garden harvested and started a batch of cabbage in the process of becoming Sourkraut and plan to start a second batch the weekend before I head out to base camp. So here’s hoping for a good batch of sourkraut and that Trish and Destiny at least leave me one jar and don’t eat it all 🙂 It would be good to have some fresh sourkraut to go with some of the fresh peaches I’m thinking of canning for the winter.

Between ATVing and working on cabins

My weekends and evening are usually spent working in the yard or garden.

Over the past few years Trish and I have cut down the size of the garden, mainly to lower the amount of work it takes to plant, weed and water. But with Destiny here and the baby on its way I decided we needed more “greens” for the kitchen. So here is our start on the garden, June 2, 2012.

I’ll update this post as the veggies start on their Alaskan Size growth. I’m hoping to put up some sourkraut this year, assuming I get a couple really big cabbages.

Some updated pictures. The garden at 6 weeks and the last of my wood to split for a 2 and half to 3 year reserve of heat :<) Read more »

A week at the cabin

So I headed out Saturday, June 30th for a week at the Cabin near Hurricane and had a productive and enjoyable trip even with the rain and mud.

Plan was to head in Saturday, make a few runs in with some supplies, a refrigerator, more materials and wait for Dean to come down and help. All went as expected with only a few bumps as it were. It has been a rainy summer and the trail was wet and muddy to say the least and I had to winch 5 times in the first 3 out of 4 trips I made on Saturday.

Our Memorial Weekend Flood

A nice rainy weekend RVing at Nome Creek with some of the Snow Travelers and new aquatints’. Trish and I headed out Friday afternoon with Destiny, Tyler and Mason (our grandkids) and made it to the camping site at Nome Creek around 6:30 PM. It was raining all day and was still raining by time we hit the bunks.

The Geese are here

Took these from the deck last night (Thursday 4/26). The dogs went crazy with the geese honking back at their barking at them and finally gave up and left.

First ATV Ride for the season

Opening the road/trail into Jake’s cabin in the White Mountains, with all the grass greening up in the yard, we didn’t think we’d have much of a problem getting into the cabin, ha, had to wench a bit on the steep sections of road. Would of been easier if I had rode the sled in, but then it wouldn’t have broken out the track for him to use next week.

Last Local Ride for 2012

Still lots of snow on the ground, the temps are staying above zero and no club ride planned, so it was posted on the FST site that we should do a ride in the Whites. Well ask and you shall receive, 4 of us meet at Hilltop at 8:00 AM and had a good breakfast, then drove to 57 Mile Elliott and the Colorado Creek Trail.

Nordale Road to Chatanika Lodge

We left from the turn out on Nordale Road, just north of the Chena River for a 10:00 AM departure to Chatanika Lodge. The plan was to run the Winter Trail to the Connector Trail at 10 Mile CHSR and then head up Adventure Road to Iowa Dome, down Hillbilly Hwy to the Alpha C trail to Cleary Summit and then on the Margaret’s Trail to Chatanika Lodge.

Tony, our leader for the day, arrived on time. I have to point this out as it is an exception to the rule :<) So we actually left at 10:00 AM as planned. The first part of the ride was a bit rough going through the trees and along the power line to the Winter Trail, which in itself was pretty smooth and fast.
