Colorado Creek Trail at 57 Mile Elliott

The plan was to meet at either Hill Top Cafe for breakfast for a 9:00 AM departure or at the trail head at 10:00 AM. Thinking on it, Jake and I figured with the roads as icy as they’ve been an hour to get from Hill Top to the trail head wasn’t enough, so we passed on the early breakfast and headed straight for the trail head. Left the house in North Pole at 8:00 and we were still late getting to the trail head, of course we did have to stop for gas and a breakfast bagel, but the road was slick and icy most of the way and slow driving.

The trail didn’t look to bad from the parking area but all the snow had a good crust on it. Everyone was ready to leave by 10:30 with one exception, Dean and company, so Jake and I waited for him and the other 9 sleds headed out. Dean and family showed up about 20 minutes later and after they got geared up we headed out, I was pushing it trying to catch up with the group and we ended up way ahead of Dean, fact is, it was the last time we saw Dean for the day.

Murphy Dome to Tolovana Hot Springs

An excellent ride. Our fearless leader (Tim) called for a breakfast meet at Sourdough Sams to start the day and it was a good call. I always enjoy their breakfast and it does make for a better start in the mornings.

Everyone motored to Murphy Dome around 9:00 and unloaded for the ride with a few folks running late and showing up close to 10:00. All in all we had 18 sleds leaving the Dome with Tim leading and Tom running drag. The wind hadn’t picked up yet and the ride down the road to the boat landing on the Chatanika was in pretty good shape.

Hurricane over Christmas Week

Well after Christmas actually. Trish and I had a nice quite Christmas with just the two of us. Destiny and the baby came over Christmas day for dinner and presents, otherwise we had a quite Day.

The day after Christmas I drove down to the cabin near Hurricane, it was a chilly -44 (f) below when I left and sure made it interesting trying to get the trailer hooked up. Dang inner mechanism on the trailer tongue didn’t want to come free, so I had to use the torch and heat it up 🙂 Just south of Nenana (about 55 miles south of the house) the temps dropped down to somewhere between -50 and -55 (f) below, man I could sure feel the steering get tight, glad I wasn’t doing any quick dodges around Moose.

When I got to the parking area I use going into the cabin it was a balmy -6 below. Not bad, cold but still 38 degrees warmer than it was at home. So I unloaded the sled and decided to do a little pre-trail breaking before hauling any loads in. I actually took my shovel and emergency pack this time, not like last month when I got stuck big time. Anywho, the ride in was uneventful and I got a fair trail set for the load hauling.

The cabin was in pretty good shape and other then the furnace acting up it didn’t take long to get her opened up and the heat going. So I made 2 trips to the truck and back with gear, food and some fuel and called it a night. Plan was to haul the rest of the loads Friday and Saturday.

Spent the next two days hauling in 2 by material, railroad ties and firewood, took me 12 trips to get it all in, but its there and now I can plan to finish fixing up the foundation, haul in the insulation for the floor and get that little project done.

Hope everyone had a good New Years.

McKay Creek Trail, Dec 21, 2013

The FST ride down McKay Creek Trail to Cache Mtn Cabin was excellent. We had 16 sleds and flat light, but the trail had lots of fresh snow on it and made for a good day of riding, although a short ride at 42 miles RT, everyone enjoyed it.

Peter brought along his fire pit and after we made it back to the parking area we had hot dog cooked on a stick and relaxed before the drive back home.

Club Rides and Cabin Trip

The weekend before Thanksgivings FST had a planned run from Nordale to Chatanika Lodge. Lots of snow and a decent trail. Stoney was our ride leader and did a good job leading until he delegated that job to me. Actually enjoyed it, breaking fresh snow and making first track. We did get turned around a bit with all the new mining activity going on they messed up some of trails a bit, but no biggie, we just made new ones. 🙂

Crazy Weather

The good news is that it wasn’t very cold during the power outage. Of course that is all relevant to whatever one is use to, I figure 20 degrees above zero is a decent temp to lose power under. The temps did drop to a chilly -30 to -40 below zero this past week, but are now back in the above zero range, was a balmy 9 above this morning. Compared to the -41 below I had yesterday morning on my drive into work, it was great.

And with some new snow fall, its time to get the sleds on the trail. Taking the Bearcat in for some warranty work and doing my pre-season go over on the M sled. Plan to get some miles on tomorrow (Sat) and maybe get a chance to haul some materials into the cabin over Thanksgiving weekend.

Hope your enjoying winter :<)

Schools closed, thousands without power as winter storm blows through Fairbanks

What a day, woke up to no power, 3 to 4 inches of wet heavy snow on the roads. Hum, no shower or coffee, no biggie I’ll just drive to work and wash up and get some coffee, nope, got to work and the power was down their as well. So after making the needed calls I headed out for a cup of coffee and restroom, only place I could find was Mickey D’s, at least they do have good coffee.

Then back to the office, close up and head for home until the power comes back on, or so I thought. Trish was having some after surgery issues, so I took her to the Dr’s office, back to work to get servers up, pick up Trish and take her to Melissa’s (the daughters) and then back to the office again. And all this driving on these oh so wonderful roads of icy slush and idiot drivers, better not go there or I may not stop. 🙂

New Family Member ?

I was out cutting firewood with Dean last Sunday and found a new friend, or maybe she found me.

It was an interesting day to say the least. I drove up to the site we have been cutting firewood at and the first thing I see is all this wood just lying there in the ditch. Some of it was to length, 20″, just my size and some were still in 30 foot log lengths. Well heck, this will be a quick and easy day for firewood gathering, or so I though.

Moose Camp and Cabin

It was a great vacation time and as always to short. Started out spending 8 days in Moose camp with some warmer then wanted weather. Actually thought it might be decent hunting season, woke up on Monday the 1st to nice kool temps, too bad it only lasted one day then warmed up again.

We did see some bulls on Monday, but after it warmed up they took off for better country I guess. Scott did get to tag a nice little bull and almost got himself run over by the guy in the process, but at least we got some meat down.

After leaving camp I headed down to the cabin for two weeks and Dean came along for the first 6 days. Plan was to do a combo work on the cabin and hunt until he left on the 15th. Worked out pretty good actually, got the upper deck done (aka hunting platform), insulation in the walls and ceiling and finished up the foam board up on the exterior. We poured 6 five inch thick concrete pads with post blocks embedded in them. Four of these are for the generator shed and the other two are for the furnace room add-on which I hope to have done by next spring.

If it don’t kill ya, it makes you stronger

Or so the saying goes. The way this month, August 2013, has gone I’m hoping there’s truth in those words.

The septic system is done and all I have left to do is grade the yard so I can seed it next year and get a final photo of the grade to complete my report to ADEC. I figured I deserved a couple of easy days down at the cabin and loaded up Thursday night and drove on down early Friday. A nice drive too, the sun was coming up as I left and the skies were clear and blue. Couldn’t ask for better day in the mountains.

We’ll things were going good, including the ATV ride into the cabin, the trails were dry and there were lots of blueberries out and I was simply enjoying the day thinking about what I needed to get done for the furnace add on I was planning to do. Then I drove up to the cabin and stopped dead in my tracks, no, my eyes must be off or else I’m having a 60’s flashback, dang it… The piling posts the cabin sits on are leaning about 5 degrees to the east, not a good thing.
